Description

Tasting Note

This wine has an intense, brooding nose showing dark berry fruit and whiffs of allspice, black cardamom, cloves and graphite. The compote of black plums, blackberries and currants of the nose follows through onto a balanced mid-palate with vibrant notes of red plums, black cherry, green olives and violets on the entry. The wine has a classic structure and grippy texture with hints of espresso, tar and star anise lingering on the finish.

Vineyard & Winemaking

Syrah grows exceptionally well on the schist and decomposed dolomitic granite of the Swartland and has found its home in this warm, Mediterranean terroir at the foothills of the Kasteelberg. Grapes for Patina was sourced solely from our Goldmine Farm along the Riebeeks River. Although the drought conditions continued in the Western Cape, our fruit was harvested in ideal conditions with small, concentrated berries providing textbook analyses. We opted for whole-bunch spontaneous vinification in concrete vats to create structure and to enhance classic perfume aromas and complexity. The wine was matured in classic European foudres, of which 30% in Stockinger Demi-muids for 18 months.
