Tasting Note

At first, it seems like a whole different wine but what the submerged cap has done is flesh out the mid-palate adding weight to the signature tannin profile that has become synonymous with Porseleinberg. There is a significant increase in the dry extract, which makes the wine much more concentrated but still retains the elegance and purity. We are now on a pretty exciting course, and the resulting wines will hold even longer than their predecessors.?
The 2018 vintage was another dry year with rainfall measuring at 224mm. What saved the vintage was the 60mm rainfall we had from September to December. We had healthy growing conditions with moderately hot conditions in October. Small berries and bunches with intensely flavoured fruit was the result. Yields still very low 3t/ha. Harvest started during the first week of February. Grapes were hand-picked and crushed as whole bunches into concrete tanks. Submerged cap fermentation was implemented in this vintage for the first time and was a huge success. Minimal pump-overs were performed with the submerged cap, and the ferments ran cool and dry within ten days. Maturation took place over 12 months in 90% foudre & 10% concrete eggs. Bottled mid-May 2019.
