Description
Tasting Note
The nose is intense, dark, and brooding with an abundance of black fruit aromas and scents of violets, pepper and cured meat with gentle whi_s of dried coriander and tar. The savoury, gamey aromas and dark berries of the nose follow through onto the palate with flavours of liquorice, black olives, and cardamom and hints of cranberry, red currant and cloves. The mid-palate is full, rich and smooth with supple tannins and integrated acidity and shows sweet tobacco and spicy undertones from subtle oaking. The wine lingers in the mouth with a smoky, slightly charry, yet very juicy flinish.
Vineyard & Winemaking
Our classic blend again comprised of our favourite three Mediterranean varieties, Syrah, Mourvedre and a dash of Viognier. Better annual rainfall than in the previous drought-stricken years and good climatic conditions during bud break ensured a normal growing season. We utilized more of our own grapes and were fortunate to focus on the Swartland profile, which lends flavour components of dark brooding fruit, violets and olive tapenade. Because Mourvedre is such a strong grower, its upright canopy and thick-skinned berries can easily withstand the annual heatwaves, without compromising the fruit quality. We always opt for Mourvedre in this popular blend, relying on its intensely bold colour, smoky aromas and meaty flavours. Both red varieties are made to contribute layers of black fruits and spice. Yet, our Syrah also offers a beautiful red fruit character, with its cherry and plum flavours on the palate. We intervene as little as possible, aiming for a pure expression of the Swartland.
